Ghazal 102

From the Divan of Hafez · 7 couplets

The Oracle Speaks

...

Last night the wind brought news of my traveled beloved —

I too will give my heart to the wind, whatever may come.

My state has come to this: I make my confidant

each evening's flashing lightning, and each morning's wind.

In the curls of your tresses my unguarded heart

never once said: Let the familiar dwelling be remembered.

Today I recognized the worth of wise counsel —

O Lord, may our advisor's soul be gladdened by You.

My heart turned to blood in your memory each time

the wind in the garden opened the bud of the rose's robe.

My frail existence had nearly slipped from my hand —

at dawn, the wind revived my soul with the scent of your union.

Hafez, your good nature will fulfill your desire —

may lives be sacrificed for people of good nature.
