Ghazal 129

From the Divan of Hafez · 7 couplets

The Oracle Speaks

...

If wine does not drive the heart's grief from our memory,

the dread of calamity will uproot our foundation.

If reason does not drop anchor in drunkenness,

how can the ship escape this whirlpool of affliction?

Alas! The sky played a hidden game against everyone,

and no one could raise a hand against this deceit.

The road passes through darkness — where is Khizr to guide us?

God forbid the fire of deprivation should dry up our water.

My weak heart draws me toward the meadow's edge

so that my soul may escape death through the illness of the breeze.

I am the physician of love — give wine, for this elixir

brings ease and drives away the fear of error.

Hafez burned, and no one told his beloved of his state —

perhaps the breeze will carry a message, for God's sake.
