The Oracle Speaks

...

Come, for the Turk of the sky has plundered the table of the fast —

the crescent of the feast has pointed toward the turning of the cup.

The reward of fasting and the accepted pilgrimage went to the one

who made a pilgrimage to the dust of love's tavern.

Our true home is the corner of the tavern —

God reward the one who built this dwelling.

What is the price of wine red as ruby? The jewel of reason —

come, for profit went to the one who made this trade.

Prayer in the curve of those prayer-niche brows

is performed by the one who made ablution with the blood of the liver.

Alas! The ogling narcissus of the city's sheikh today

looked upon the dregs-drinkers with contempt.

Gaze upon the friend's face and be grateful to your eyes,

for the experienced one looked with true insight.

Hear the story of love from Hafez, not from the preacher,

though the preacher employed much art in his phrasing.
