Ghazal 135

From the Divan of Hafez · 7 couplets

The Oracle Speaks

...

Like the wind, I intend to head for the beloved's lane —

I will make each breath musk-laden with her sweet scent.

In vain, without wine and beloved, life has been passing —

enough idleness! From today I will set to work.

All the honor I have gathered from learning and religion

I will scatter as an offering at the feet of that beauty.

Like the candle at dawn, her love has made me clear —

I will spend my life in this affair and calling.

In memory of your eyes, I will make myself a ruin —

I will make the foundation of our ancient vow secure.

Where is the breeze? For this blood-stained soul, like a rose,

I will sacrifice to the fragrance of the beloved's tresses.

Hypocrisy and deceit do not bring the heart clarity, Hafez —

I will choose the way of the rend and of love.
