From the Divan of Hafez · 8 couplets
...
The day of separation and the night of parting from the beloved has ended —
I cast this omen, and the star has passed, and the work has ended.
All that pride and luxury that autumn commanded —
in the end, at the feet of the spring wind, it has ended.
Thank God, by the fortune of the rose's tilted cap,
the arrogance of the winter wind and the thorns' authority has ended.
The dawn of hope, which was secluded behind the veil of the unseen —
tell it: Come forth, for the work of the dark night has ended.
All that turmoil of long nights and the heart's grief —
all ended in the shadow of the beloved's tresses.
I still cannot believe, from time's faithlessness,
that the tale of sorrow has ended in the beloved's reign.
Cupbearer, you showed grace — may your cup be ever full of wine,
for by your planning, the anxiety of the hangover has ended.
In the verse of Hafez, this glad song shall remain:
how the night of separation from that chosen one has ended.
