I see no friendship in anyone — what has happened to friends?
When did friendship end? What has happened to the devoted?
The Water of Life has grown dark — where is Khizr of blessed step?
Blood drips from the branch of the rose — what happened to spring winds?
No one says: A friend upheld the right of friendship —
what has befallen the grateful? What has happened to companions?
No ruby has come from the mine of generosity for years —
what happened to the sun's radiance, the wind's effort, the rain?
This land was the city of friends and the soil of the kind —
when did kindness end? What has happened to the rulers?
The ball of grace and honor has been thrown into the field —
no one enters the arena — what has happened to the riders?
A hundred thousand roses bloomed, and not one bird sang —
what befell the nightingales? What has happened to the songbirds?
Venus does not play a sweet tune — perhaps her lute has burned?
No one has the taste for drunkenness — what has happened to wine-drinkers?
Hafez, no one knows the divine secrets — be silent.
Of whom do you ask: What has happened to the turning of the ages?
یاری اندر کس نمیبینیم، یاران را چه شد؟
دوستی کِی آخر آمد؟ دوستداران را چه شد؟
آب حیوان تیرهگون شد، خضر فرخپِی کجاست؟
خون چکید از شاخِ گل، بادِ بهاران را چه شد؟
کس نمیگوید که «یاری داشت حقِّ دوستی»
حقشناسان را چه حال افتاد؟ یاران را چه شد؟
لعلی از کانِ مُروّت برنیامد سالهاست
تابش خورشید و سعی باد و باران را چه شد؟
شهرِ یاران بود و خاکِ مهربانان این دیار
مهربانی کِی سر آمد؟ شهریاران را چه شد؟
گویِ توفیق و کرامت، در میان افکندهاند
کس به میدان در نمیآید، سواران را چه شد؟
صدهزاران گل شکفت و بانگِ مرغی برنخاست
عندلیبان را چه پیش آمد؟ هَزاران را چه شد؟
زهره سازی خوش نمیسازد، مگر عودش بسوخت؟
کس ندارد ذوقِ مستی، مِیگساران را چه شد؟
حافظ اسرارِ الهی کَس نمیداند، خموش
از که میپرسی که دورِ روزگاران را چه شد؟
