Ghazal 179

Good news has come: the days of grief will not remain.

As it did not stay that way, neither will it remain this way.

Though I became lowly as dust in the beloved's sight,

the rival too will not remain so honored.

Since the gatekeeper strikes everyone with the sword,

no one will remain a dweller in the sanctuary's quarters.

What room is there for thanks or complaint about good and bad designs?

For the inscription on the page of existence will not remain.

They say the song of Jamshid's gathering was this:

"Bring the cup of wine, for Jam will not remain."

Count it a windfall, O candle — the union with the moth!

For this affair will not last until dawn.

O wealthy one! Win the heart of your poor dervish,

for the treasury of gold and the storehouse of silver will not remain.

Upon this emerald portico they have written in gold:

"Nothing will remain except the goodness of the generous."

Do not lose hope of the beloved's kindness, Hafez,

for the mark of cruelty and the sign of oppression will not remain.
