Ghazal 186

From the Divan of Hafez · 8 couplets

The Oracle Speaks

...

If the wine-seller grants the wish of the rends,

God will forgive the sin and ward off calamity.

Cupbearer, give wine in the cup of justice, so the beggar

need not resent that the world is full of trouble.

Truly, from these griefs glad news of safety will arrive

if a traveler keeps faith with the covenant of trust.

Whether hardship comes or ease, O sage,

do not ascribe it to another, for God does these things.

In a workshop where reason and virtue have no path,

why should weak understanding offer meddling advice?

Minstrel, tune your instrument — for no one dies without his fated hour,

and whoever does not sing this melody commits an error.

For us whom love's pain and the hangover's affliction have slain —

either the friend's union or pure wine will be the cure.

The soul went for wine, and Hafez burned with love —

where is one of Christ-like breath to revive us?
