From the Divan of Hafez · 9 couplets
...
The crowned ones are slaves of your drunken narcissus eye —
those ruined by your ruby wine are the truly sober.
The breeze betrayed you, and my tears betrayed me —
otherwise, lover and beloved are keepers of secrets.
When you pass beneath those doubled tresses, look —
see what mourners stand at your right and left.
Pass like the breeze through the violet-bed and see
how restless they are from the tyranny of your tresses.
Paradise is our portion — O God-knowing one, go,
for sinners are the ones deserving of grace.
It is not I alone who sings ghazals to that rose of a cheek —
your nightingales from every side are thousands.
You be my guide, O Khizr of blessed step, for I
go on foot, while my companions are all mounted.
Come to the tavern and make your face crimson —
do not go to the cloister, for those there are black-doers.
May Hafez never be freed from those curling tresses,
for those bound by your lasso are the truly saved.
