From the Divan of Hafez · 7 couplets
...
Might it be that they open the doors of the taverns?
That they untie the knot of our closed affairs?
If they closed them for the sake of the self-admiring ascetic,
take heart — for God's sake they will open them.
By the purity of heart of the dawn-drinking rends,
many a closed door they will open with the key of prayer.
Write the letter of condolence for the vine's daughter,
so that all the young Magians loosen their doubled tresses.
Cut the harp's tresses in mourning for the death of pure wine,
so that the companions all shed blood from their lashes.
They closed the tavern door — God forbid
that they should open the door of the house of fraud and pretense.
Hafez, this cloak you wear — tomorrow you will see
what infidel's belt they deceitfully reveal beneath it.
