From the Divan of Hafez · 7 couplets
...
Last night in our circle, the tale was of your tresses —
until midnight, the talk was of the chain of your hair.
The heart that was turning in blood from the arrows of your lashes
was again longing for the bow-house of your brow.
God forgive the breeze that brought a message from you —
otherwise we met no one who was from your lane.
The world had no knowledge of love's turmoil and mischief —
the stirrer of the world's sedition was your sorcerous glance.
I, the bewildered one, was also among the people of well-being —
the snare upon my path was the curl of your Hindu tress.
Open the knot of your robe, that my heart may open —
for whatever ease I had was from your side.
By your fidelity — pass over the grave of Hafez,
for he was leaving the world, and his longing was for your face.
