The Oracle Speaks

...

From my eye, the heart's blood flows all over my face —

what shall I say goes over my face from my eye?

We have hidden a desire within our breast —

if our heart goes with the wind, it goes from that desire.

The sun of the east would tear its garment from envy

if my love-nourishing moon were to pass in her robe.

We laid our face upon the dust of the beloved's road —

it is right if a familiar one passes over our face.

The water of my eye is a flood — and whoever passes by,

even if his heart is made of stone, would be moved.

Day and night we have dealings with the water of our eye —

on account of why it flows to the head of her lane.

Hafez goes to the tavern lane always, with a sincere heart,

like the Sufis of the cloister, from purity.
