From the Divan of Hafez · 7 couplets

The Oracle Speaks

...

Whoever leaves the head of your lane in displeasure —

his work will not prosper, and in the end he will leave in shame.

The caravan whose escort is God's protection

will sit in splendor and depart in majesty.

The traveler finds the way to the Friend by the light of guidance —

for one arrives nowhere if one goes in error.

Take your desire at life's end from wine and the beloved —

it is a pity if all one's time goes to waste.

O guide of the lost heart! For God's sake, help —

for the stranger, if he cannot find the way, goes by guidance.

The decree of modesty and drunkenness all rests on your seal —

no one knows in what state it will finally go.

Hafez, take a cup from the spring of wisdom —

perhaps the image of ignorance will depart from the tablet of your heart.
