The Oracle Speaks

...

If I pick one fruit from your garden, what will happen?

If I see a step ahead by your lamp, what will happen?

O Lord, in the shelter of the shadow of that tall cypress,

if I, the burnt one, sit for one moment, what will happen?

After all, O auspicious ring of Jamshid,

if your reflection falls upon the setting of my ring, what will happen?

The city's preacher chose the love of the judge and the officer —

if I choose the love of a beauty, what will happen?

My reason left the house — and if this is what wine does,

I saw beforehand what would happen to the house of my faith.

My precious life was spent on beloved and wine —

what will come of that, and what will happen to me from this?

The master knew I am a lover and said nothing —

if Hafez also knows my state, what will happen?
