Ghazal 239

From the Divan of Hafez · 8 couplets

The Oracle Speaks

...

Good news has come: spring arrived and greenery sprouted —

if the salary comes, its spending will be on roses and wine.

The whistling of the bird has risen — where is the wine-flask?

A cry has fallen upon the nightingale — who drew the rose's veil?

What pleasure can one find from the fruits of paradise

if one has never bitten the apple of a beauty's chin?

Do not complain of hardship, for on the path of seeking

no one reached comfort who did not endure difficulty.

From the cupbearer's moonlike face, pick a rose today,

for around the garden's cheek, the line of violet has sprouted.

The cupbearer's wink so stole my heart from my hand

that I have no desire for talk with anyone else.

This colorful patched cloak of mine, like a rose, I will burn —

for the old wine-seller would not buy it for a single sip.

Spring is passing, O just one — take heed!

For the season has gone, and Hafez has still not tasted wine.
