Ghazal 241

From the Divan of Hafez · 7 couplets

The Oracle Speaks

...

Companions, remember the friend of the night —

remember the rights of sincere servitude.

In the time of high spirits, from the sighs and cries of lovers,

remember the sound and melody of harp and lute.

When the grace of wine makes a display in the cupbearer's face,

remember the lovers with song and melody.

When you bring the hand of hope to the midst of desire,

remember the covenant of our companionship in your midst.

Even if the steed of fortune runs with pride,

remember your companions at the tip of the whip.

You do not spare a moment's thought for the faithful —

remember the faithlessness of the turning age.

By way of mercy, O dwellers of the seat of glory,

remember the face of Hafez and this threshold.
