Ghazal 244

Companions! Undo the knot from the beloved's tresses —

it is a fine night; make it long with this tale.

This is the presence of intimate solitude, and friends are gathered —

recite the protective verse, and close the door.

The rebab and harp say in a loud voice:

Lend the ear of wisdom to the message of the people of mystery.

By the beloved's life — grief will not tear its veil upon you

if you trust in the grace of the All-Accomplishing.

Between lover and beloved the difference is great —

when the beloved shows pride, show your need.

The first counsel of the elder of companionship is this:

Avoid the uncongenial companion.

Whoever in this circle is not alive by love —

perform the funeral prayer over him, by my decree, though he is not dead.

And if Hafez asks a gift from you,

refer him to the lip of the heart-soothing beloved.
