From the Divan of Hafez · 9 couplets
...
If life remains, I will reach the tavern once more —
I will do no other work than serving the rends.
Blessed that day when with weeping eyes I go
to wash the tavern's door with my tears once more.
There is no discernment among these people — God provide a means
so I may take my jewel to another buyer.
If the beloved went and did not honor the rights of old companionship —
God forbid that I should go after another beloved.
If the circle of the blue sky aids me,
I will win her back again by another compass.
My mind seeks peace, if they would allow it —
her mischievous glance and that thieving tress.
See our sealed secret, told in melodies —
every moment with drum and flute at another marketplace.
Every moment I groan from pain, for the sky every hour
assaults my wounded heart with yet another torment.
I say again: Hafez is not alone in this calamity —
many others have drowned in this desert.
