Ghazal 261

From the Divan of Hafez · 6 couplets

The Oracle Speaks

...

Enter, that in the weary heart, strength may enter again —

come, that in the dead body, the soul may enter again.

Come, for your absence closed my eye in such a way

that only the opening of the door of union may open it again.

The grief that, like a Zanzibar army, conquered the realm of the heart —

may it be cleansed by the host of joy from the Rome of your face.

Before the mirror of the heart, whatever I hold up —

nothing appears except the image of your beauty.

By that likeness that the night is pregnant with the day — from you,

I count the stars until I see what the night will give birth to.

Come, for the natural nightingale of Hafez's mind

is singing again in hope of the rosebush of your union.
