Ghazal 268

From the Divan of Hafez · 8 couplets

The Oracle Speaks

...

A rose-cheeked one from the garden of the world is enough for us —

from this meadow, the shadow of that flowing cypress is enough for us.

I — and the company of the hypocrites — God keep me far! —

from the heavyweights of the world, one heavy goblet is enough for us.

They give the palace of paradise as reward for deeds —

we who are rends and beggars, the Magian temple is enough for us.

Sit by the stream and watch life pass —

for this sign from the passing world is enough for us.

Look at the currency of the world's market and the world's pain —

if this profit and loss is not enough for you, it is enough for us.

The beloved is with us — what need to seek more?

The fortune of the company of that soul's companion is enough for us.

From your door, for God's sake, do not send me to paradise —

for the head of your lane, beyond all existence, is enough for us.

Hafez, it is unfair to complain of one's allotted portion —

a nature like water and flowing ghazals are enough for us.
