The Oracle Speaks

...

I have borne a pain of love — do not ask.

I have tasted a poison of separation — do not ask.

I have wandered the world, and at the end

I have chosen a heart-ravisher — do not ask.

So much in the longing for the dust of her door

the water of my eyes flows — do not ask.

I, with my own ear, from her mouth last night

heard words — do not ask.

Why do you bite your lip toward me, saying: Do not tell —

I have bitten a ruby lip — do not ask.

Without you, in the hovel of my own beggary,

I have endured hardships — do not ask.

Like Hafez, a stranger on the road of love,

I have reached a station — do not ask.
