The Oracle Speaks

...

In the season of the tulip, take the cup and be free of hypocrisy —

in the scent of the rose, for a breath be a companion of the breeze.

I do not tell you to worship wine all year long —

three months drink wine, and nine months be pious.

When the elder of the path of love refers you to wine,

drink, and await the mercy of God.

If you wish to reach the secret of the unseen like Jamshid,

come and be the companion of the world-revealing cup.

Like the bud, though the world's work is all about being closed,

you, like the spring breeze, be the opener of knots.

Do not seek fidelity from anyone — and if you won't listen,

go on seeking the Simorgh and the philosopher's stone in vain.

Do not be a follower of strangers' commands, Hafez —

but be a companion of the pious rends.
