Ghazal 277

From the Divan of Hafez · 9 couplets

The Oracle Speaks

...

The nightingale's every thought is that the rose became its friend —

the rose is thinking how to play its coquetry on him.

Heart-ravishing is not only about slaying the lover —

the true master is one who cares for his servant's grief.

It is fitting that blood should surge in the heart of the ruby —

from this deceit that pottery breaks its market.

The nightingale learned speech from the grace of the rose — otherwise

all this song and ghazal was not stored in its beak.

O you who pass through the lane of our beloved —

be warned, for its walls will break your head.

That traveler, with whom a hundred caravans of hearts journey —

wherever he is, O God, keep him safe.

Though the company of safety pleased you, O heart,

the side of love is precious — do not let it go.

The merry Sufi, the way he tilted his cap —

with two more cups, his turban will be disordered.

The heart of Hafez, accustomed to seeing you,

is nursed on the pride of union — do not seek to wound it.
