The Oracle Speaks

...

O you whose every form is pleasing and whose every place is lovely —

my heart is happy from the sweet, sugar-chewing coquetry of yours.

Like a fresh rose-petal is your being, delicate —

like the cypress of paradise's garden, head to foot, you are lovely.

Your manner and pride are sweet, your down and mole are charming,

your eye and brow are beautiful, your stature and height are lovely.

Both the garden of my imagination is full of your form and color,

and the sense of my heart is happy from your jasmine-shadowing tresses.

On the path of love, where there is no crossing from the flood of tribulation,

I have made my mind happy with the longing for you.

What shall I say in thanks for your eye? — that in that very sickness

it makes my pain pleasant, from your beautiful face.

In the desert of seeking, though from every side there is danger,

heartless Hafez goes happily by devotion to you.
