From the Divan of Hafez · 7 couplets
...
I swear by the majesty and rank and glory of Shah Shuja
that I have no quarrel with anyone over wealth or rank.
My homemade wine is enough — bring the Magian wine —
the drinking partner has arrived — O companion of repentance, farewell.
For God's sake, wash my cloak in wine —
for I smell no good from these affairs.
See how, dancing, he goes to the cry of the harp —
he who would not give permission to listen to music.
Cast a glance at the lovers, in thanks for this blessing —
for I am the obedient slave, and you the obeyed king.
We thirst for the grace of a draught from your cup — but
we dare not presume, we do not give you a headache.
May God never separate the brow and face of Hafez
from the dust of the court of the majesty of Shah Shuja.
