Ghazal 302

From the Divan of Hafez · 10 couplets

The Oracle Speaks

...

May you bring good news, O breeze of the north —

for the time of union is reaching us.

The tale of love has no end —

it is cut short here, on the tongue of speech.

What of Salma, and who is at Dhi Salam? —

where are our neighbors, and how is their state?

The dwelling fell to ruin after its health —

so ask the ruins about its condition.

In the beauty of perfection you attained your wish —

may God turn away from you the evil eye of perfection.

O courier of the sanctuary, God protect you —

welcome, welcome — come, come!

The arena of our gathering lies empty

of companions and the brimming cup.

Now the night of separation casts its shadow —

let us see what the night-travelers of fancy will play.

Our Turk looks toward no one —

alas at this pride and majesty and glory.

Hafez — love and patience, how long?

The lament of lovers is sweet — lament!
