From the Divan of Hafez · 7 couplets
...
Apart from the fact that faith and knowledge have gone from my hand —
come, tell me: what profit have I gained from your love?
Though the harvest of my life was given to the wind by your grief —
by the dust of your precious foot, I have not broken the vow.
Though like a mote I am small — see, by the fortune of love,
how in the air of your face I have joined the sun.
Bring wine — for it has been a lifetime since I, in security,
sat in the corner of safety for the sake of pleasure.
If you are of the sober people, O advisor —
do not cast your words to the dust, for I am drunk.
How shall I raise my head from shame before the friend —
for no worthy service has come from my hand.
Hafez burned, and that heart-soothing beloved did not say:
Let me send a balm, for I have wounded his mind.
