Ghazal 319

From the Divan of Hafez · 10 couplets

The Oracle Speaks

...

For years I followed the creed of the rends —

until by reason's decree I imprisoned greed.

I did not find my way to the dwelling of the Anqa by myself —

I traversed this stage with the bird of Solomon.

Cast a shadow on my wounded heart, O flowing treasure —

for I have ruined this house in the passion for you.

I repented that I would not kiss the cupbearer's lip — and now

I bite my lip, asking why I listened to the fool.

In the contrary-coming of habit, seek your desire! — for I

gathered composure from those disordered tresses.

The design of modesty and drunkenness is not in your hand or mine —

what the Sultan of Eternity said to do, that I did.

I have hope of the paradise of Eden from eternal grace —

though I served as doorman of the tavern for long.

That in old age the company of Joseph honored me —

is the reward of patience I showed in the House of Sorrows.

Rising at dawn and seeking health, like Hafez —

whatever I did, I did by the fortune of the Quran.

If I sit at the head of the court of ghazals, what wonder? —

for years I served the master of the court.
