From the Divan of Hafez · 9 couplets
...
If the dust of the beloved's foot comes to hand,
on the tablet of my sight I will write a line of dust.
In hope of your embrace I drowned — and my hope is
that the wave of my tears will carry me to shore.
If her moth reaches me seeking my life,
like a candle, at that very moment I will surrender my soul.
Today do not withdraw from faithfulness to me — and think
of that night when I raise my hands in prayer from grief.
Your two dark tresses, in consolation of the lovers,
gave a promise of peace — and took my peace.
O wind, from that wine bring me a breeze —
for that healing scent will drive away my hangover.
If the beloved does not test the assay of my counterfeit heart,
I will count the flowing coin from my eye at her breath.
Do not shake your hem free of me, the dust-covered — for after me
the wind cannot carry the dust from this door.
Hafez — since her ruby lip is to me a precious life,
it would be a lifetime, that moment when I bring my life to my lip.
