Ghazal 339

From the Divan of Hafez · 7 couplets

The Oracle Speaks

...

When the image of your face passes through the garden of my eye,

the heart comes following the gaze toward the window of the eye.

I see no vantage worthy of your resting-place —

except for me, from all the world, and this appointed corner of my eye.

Come, for rubies and jewels in offering to your arrival

I draw from the treasury of my heart to the window of my eye.

At dawn my flowing tears intended ruin —

if the blood of my liver had not caught the hem of my eye.

The first day I saw your face, the heart was saying:

if any harm comes, my blood is on the neck of the eye.

In hope of the glad news of your union, until dawn, last night,

I placed the bright lamp of my eye in the path of the wind.

By humanity — do not strike the ailing heart of Hafez

with the heart-piercing, man-felling arrow of your eye.
