Ghazal 357

From the Divan of Hafez · 7 couplets

The Oracle Speaks

...

In the tavern of the Magians I see the light of God —

see this wonder: what a light, and from where I see it.

Do not sell your splendor to me, O Prince of Pilgrims — for you

see the house, while I see the Lord of the house.

I wish to open a musk-pod from the tresses of idols —

it is a far-off thought; perhaps I see an error.

The burning of the heart, flowing tears, the dawn sigh, the night's lament —

all this I see from the grace of your glance.

Every moment from your face an image strikes me on the road of fancy —

to whom shall I say what I see behind this curtain?

No one has seen from the musk of Khutan and the musk-pod of China

what I see every dawn from the morning breeze.

Friends, do not fault Hafez for his gazing —

for I see him among the lovers of yours.
