From the Divan of Hafez · 7 couplets
...
We are the carefree drunkards who have lost our hearts —
confidant of love and intimate of the cup of wine.
Many a bow of blame was drawn at us
until we opened our work from the beloved's brow.
O rose, you bore the brand of morning wine yesterday —
we are the poppy that was born with the brand.
If the Magian elder grew weary of our repentance,
tell him: Clarify the wine, for we have stood in apology.
The work rests with you — give aid, O guide of the way —
for we confess, yet we have fallen from the path.
Like the tulip — do not look at the wine and the cup in our midst —
look at this brand we have placed on our bleeding heart.
You said: Hafez, what is all this color and fancy? —
do not see a wrong design, for we are that same blank tablet.
