From the Divan of Hafez · 7 couplets
...
We came to this door not in pursuit of pomp and rank —
from the evil of events we have come here for refuge.
We are travelers on the road of love, and from the border of nonexistence
to the realm of existence we have come all this way.
We saw the green of your cheek's down, and from the garden of paradise
we have come seeking this sun-herb.
With such a treasure, whose keeper is the Trusted Spirit —
we have come begging at the door of the king's house.
Where is the anchor of your forbearance, O ship of grace? —
for in this sea of generosity we have come drowning in sin.
Honor is departing — O fault-covering cloud, rain down —
for to the register of deeds we have come with a blackened book.
Hafez, cast off this woolen cloak —
for behind the caravan, we have come with the fire of sighs.
