Ghazal 368

From the Divan of Hafez · 9 couplets

The Oracle Speaks

...

Rise, let us seek an opening from the door of the tavern —

let us sit on the road of the friend and seek a desire.

We have no provisions for the path to the sanctuary of union — unless

by begging at the tavern's door we seek provisions.

Though our stained tears flow freely,

to send as messenger to her, let us seek one of pure nature.

May the pleasure of the brand of your grief be forbidden to our heart

if from the cruelty of your love's grief we seek justice.

The point of your mole cannot be placed on the tablet of sight —

unless from the pupil of the eye we seek ink.

The heart, with its life, desired a coquetry from your sweet lip —

with a sugar-laugh your lip said: Let us seek an auction.

So that it may be a fragrant prescription for the love-struck heart,

from your musk-rubbing script let us seek a copy.

Since your grief cannot be found except in a happy heart,

in hope of your grief, let us seek a happy mind.

How long will you sit at the schoolhouse door, Hafez? —

rise, let us seek an opening from the door of the tavern.
