From the Divan of Hafez · 7 couplets
...
Friends, in the time of the rose, it is best we strive for pleasure —
this is the speech of the people of heart, and we heed it with all our soul.
There is no generosity in anyone, and the time of joy is passing —
the remedy is to sell the prayer-rug for wine.
What a joy-giving breeze — O God, send
a beauty before whose face we may drink rose-colored wine.
The organ-music of the sky robs the people of art —
how shall we not lament this grief, and why should we not cry out?
The rose came to a boil, and we did not pour water upon it from wine —
no wonder that from the fire of deprivation and desire we boil.
We drink an imagined wine from the tulip's cup —
far be the evil eye — for without minstrel and wine, we are intoxicated.
Hafez, to whom can this strange state be told? — that we
are nightingales who are silent in the season of the rose.
