Ghazal 382

From the Divan of Hafez · 8 couplets

The Oracle Speaks

...

Since you have come, recite an opening prayer over this broken one —

open your lip, for your ruby lip gives life to the dead.

That one who came to inquire and read the opening prayer and goes —

tell her: Stay a moment, that I may send my spirit after her.

O you who are the physician of the weary — see my tongue —

for this breath and smoke of my breast is the heart's burden on the tongue.

Though the fever of my bones grew warm from love and departed,

like my fever, the fire of love does not leave my bones.

The state of my heart from your mole: it has its home in fire —

my eye from your two eyes has become weary and feeble.

Quench my fever with the water of my two eyes, and see

my pulse — does it give any sign of life?

She who always gave me the flask for pleasure —

why does she take my flask every moment before the physician?

Hafez — your verse gave me a draught from the Water of Life —

leave the physician; come, read me the prescription of my draught.
