From the Divan of Hafez · 7 couplets

The Oracle Speaks

...

O Lord, return that musky gazelle to Khutan —

and that straight swaying cypress, return it to the meadow.

Soothe our wounded heart with a breeze —

that is, that life that left the body, return it to the body.

Since the moon and sun reach their stations by your command,

return my moon-faced beloved also to me.

Eyes have become blood in seeking the ruby of Yemen —

O Lord, return that shining star to Yemen.

Go, O auspicious bird of fortunate signs —

before the phoenix, deliver the speech of crow and magpie.

The word is this: that without you we do not desire life —

hear, O courier of news, and deliver this word.

That one whose homeland was the eye of Hafez — O Lord,

by his desire, from exile, return him to his homeland.
