Ghazal 403

From the Divan of Hafez · 7 couplets

The Oracle Speaks

...

Drink ruby wine and see the faces of the moon-browed ones —

contrary to the creed of those ones, see the beauty of these.

Beneath the patched cloak they have lassos —

see the long-handedness of these short-sleeved ones.

They do not bow their heads to the harvest of two worlds —

see the pride and arrogance of these beggars and gleaners.

For the price of half a coquetry, they demand a thousand lives —

see the need of the people of heart and the pride of the graceful ones.

She gave the rights of our friendship to the wind and left —

see the fidelity of friends and companions.

Becoming love's captive is the remedy for my freedom —

see the foresight of the prudent, far-seeing ones.

The company of the friend took turbidity from the heart of Hafez —

see the purity of aspiration of the pure-hearted and pure-faithed ones.
