From the Divan of Hafez · 7 couplets
...
How sweet the ambergris breeze — a heart-pleasing nosegay
that rose in your devotion at the early dawn.
Be the guide of the way, O bird of blessed visage —
for my eye became water from longing for the dust of that threshold.
In memory of my emaciated form, drowned in heart's blood —
look at the crescent from the edge of the horizon.
I am the one who breathes without you — what shame —
perhaps you will pardon, otherwise what excuse is there for sin?
From your friends, the morning breeze learned the way of love
at dawn, when it tore apart the garment of night.
For love of your face, on the day I leave this world,
from my grave a red rose will grow instead of grass.
Do not give displeasure to your delicate mind from me too quickly —
for your Hafez himself just now said: In the name of God.
