Ghazal 438

From the Divan of Hafez · 8 couplets

The Oracle Speaks

...

Salma stole my heart with her temples —

and my spirit, every day, calls to me.

O beauty, have mercy on me, the heartless one —

and unite me, in spite of the enemies.

O beloved, in the grief of love's longing for you,

we have placed our trust in the Lord of all creatures.

O you who denied me the love of Salma —

you would go mad if you passed by that fair face in the valley.

For like one who dies for an idol, O heart, on this road

I am drowning in love in the sea of affection.

On the path of love's desire I have journeyed —

bewildered, one direction has brought us from the paths.

The grief of this heart you must bear inevitably —

otherwise it will build what will not make you happy.

The heart of Hafez fell into the curl of your tresses —

in a dark night, and God is the guide.
