Ghazal 443

From the Divan of Hafez · 7 couplets

The Oracle Speaks

...

If like the cypress you stroll for a moment in the garden,

every rose from jealousy of your face will eat a thorn.

From the infidelity of your tresses, every ring is a tumult —

from the sorcery of your eyes, every corner has one sick.

Do not go to sleep like my fortune, O drunken eye of the beloved —

for from every side, a wakeful sigh pursues you.

The offering for the dust of your road is the cash of my life — although

the cash of the soul has no value before you.

O heart, do not always boast of the heart-binding tresses —

when your judgment grows dark, will any work open for you?

My head departed and still this matter did not come to an end —

my heart was seized, and you had no care for the captive.

Like a point, I told her: Come into the center of the circle —

with a laugh she said: O Hafez, what kind of compass is this?
