From the Divan of Hafez · 7 couplets
...
O you who hold the exile of lovers as right —
you keep lovers separate from you.
The thirsty one of the desert — grant him a cool water —
by the hope that you hold in God on this road.
You stole my heart and I pardoned you, O soul — but
keep it better than this, the one you hold as mine.
Our cup, which other companions drink —
we will not bear it if you hold it as right.
O fly, the court of the Simurgh is not your arena —
you show yourself off and cause us trouble.
You, by your own fault, have fallen deprived from this door —
from whom do you complain, and why do you cry out?
Hafez — from kings, one seeks rank through service —
having made no effort, what hope of reward do you hold?
