Ghazal 451

From the Divan of Hafez · 9 couplets

The Oracle Speaks

...

How well the sky aided you on the day of judgment —

now how will you give thanks, and what offering will you bring?

The one who fell — God took his hand —

tell him: May it be your task to eat the grief of the fallen.

In the lane of love, the pomp of kings is worthless —

confess your servitude and show your devotion.

Cupbearer, come in with glad tidings of pleasure —

that for one moment you may take the grief of the world from my heart.

On the highway of rank and greatness, there is much danger —

it is better that you pass lightly over this hill.

The sultan has the worry of armies and the desire for crown and treasure —

the dervish has peace of mind and the corner of the qalandar's life.

Let me say one Sufi word — is it permitted?

O light of the eye — peace is better than war and judgment.

The attainment of desire depends on thought and aspiration —

from the king, a vow of good; from God, the aid of success.

Hafez, do not wash the dust of poverty and contentment from your face —

for this dust is better than the work of alchemy.
