Ghazal 453

From the Divan of Hafez · 5 couplets

The Oracle Speaks

...

O you who are always proud of yourself —

if you have no love, you are excused.

Do not go around the madmen of love —

for you are famous for the reason of your precious intellect.

The drunkenness of love is not in your head —

go, for you are drunk on grape-juice.

A yellow face and a pain-laden sigh —

these are the cure for the sickness of lovers.

Pass beyond your name and shame, Hafez —

ask for a cup of wine, for you have a hangover.
