Ghazal 459

From the Divan of Hafez · 8 couplets

The Oracle Speaks

...

From this fine script you are drawing on the rose of your cheek,

you are drawing a line over the page of rose and garden.

The tears that dwell in the sanctuary of my hidden chamber —

you draw them beyond the seven veils to the marketplace.

The sluggish traveler — like the morning breeze by the scent of tresses —

you draw every moment into the bondage of the chain of work.

Every moment, in memory of that wine-colored lip and drunken eye,

you draw me from my solitude to the house of the hangover.

You said: Your head will be bound to our saddle-strap —

it is easy, if you bear the burden of this load.

With your eye and brow, what plan can my heart make? —

alas, this bow that you draw against me, the sick one.

Come back — for the evil eye is repelled by your face —

O fresh rose, why do you drag your hem from this thorn?

Hafez, what more do you seek from the bounty of the world? —

you drink wine and you draw the beloved's tresses.
