The Oracle Speaks

...

Who will carry a message from me, the beggar, to the kings? —

for in the lane of the wine-sellers, two thousand Jams go for a cup.

I have become ruined and ill-famed, and still I am hopeful

that by the aspiration of the noble ones, I may reach a good name.

You who sell alchemy — cast a glance at our base metal —

for we have no merchandise and have cast a trap.

Strange, the fidelity of the beloved — who showed no favor —

not a message in a letter, not a greeting by a pen.

If this wine is raw, if that companion is cooked —

a thousand times better is one raw one than a thousand cooked.

Do not lead me astray, O sheikh, with the beads of your rosary —

for when the bird falls clever, it falls into no trap.

I have the desire to serve you — buy me with kindness, do not sell —

for when a servant falls so low, in blessedness he becomes a slave.

Where shall I bring my complaint? To whom shall I tell this tale? —

that your lip was our life, and you gave it no permanence.

Open the arrow of your eyelashes and spill the blood of Hafez —

for against such a killer, no one takes revenge.
