Ghazal 478

From the Divan of Hafez · 6 couplets

The Oracle Speaks

...

Drink a cup of wine, a full measure —

that by it you may uproot grief from your heart.

Keep your heart open like the cup of wine —

how long will you keep your head down like a lowly vat?

When from the cup of selflessness you drink a cup,

you will boast less of "I" and "me."

Be steadfast in your step like a stone, not like water —

for you are all color-mixing and wet-hemmed.

Bind your heart to wine, that manfully

you may break the neck of hypocrisy and piety.

Rise and make an effort like Hafez — perhaps

you may cast yourself at the feet of the beloved.
