The Oracle Speaks

...

O you who in killing us show no mercy at all —

you burn both profit and capital, and show no restraint.

The grief-stricken ones of calamity have deadly poison —

to target this people is a mistake — beware, do not do it.

Our pain, which can be cured by a corner of the eye —

it is not the condition of fairness that you give no remedy.

Our eye, like a sea from hope of you — why then

do you not take a stroll by the edge of this sea?

Every cruelty they reported to you from your noble people —

is the word of the self-interested; you — do not do those things.

If our beauty should display itself to you, O ascetic,

from God you would desire nothing but wine and the beloved.

Hafez, prostrate before those prayer-niche brows —

for you will not make a sincere prayer anywhere else.
