From the Divan of Hafez · 9 couplets
...
At dawn, the voice of the tavern called me, wishing me fortune —
it said: Come back, for you are an old devotee of this court.
Like Jam, drink our cup — for from the secret of both worlds
the reflection of the world-showing cup will give you awareness.
At the tavern door, the rends are qalandars —
who take and give the crown of emperors.
A brick under the head, and feet upon the seven stars —
see the hand of power and the rank of the exalted.
Our head and the tavern door — whose rooftop
rose to the sky, and whose wall is of this lowness.
Do not cross this stage without the company of Khezr —
it is darkness — beware of the danger of going astray.
If they grant you the sovereignty of poverty, O heart,
your least dominion will be from the moon to the fish.
You do not know how to speak of poverty — do not give up
the seat of mastery and the assembly of Turanshah.
Hafez of raw desire! Have some shame from this tale —
what is your deed, that you seek the highest paradise?
