Ghazal 494

From the Divan of Hafez · 8 couplets

The Oracle Speaks

...

O heart! If from that dimpled chin-well you emerge,

wherever you go, you will quickly emerge regretful.

Be aware — for if you listen to the whispers of reason,

like Adam you will emerge from the garden of paradise.

Perhaps the sky will not take your hand with any water —

if you emerge thirsty-lipped from the Spring of Life.

I give my life from longing to see you, like the dawn —

perhaps like the sun, radiant, you will emerge.

I will send so many breaths of aspiration upon you, like the breeze,

that from the bud, like the rose, happy and laughing you will emerge.

In the dark night of your separation, my life came to my lip —

it is time that like the shining moon you should emerge.

On your path I have bound two hundred streams from my eyes —

perhaps like the swaying cypress you will emerge.

Hafez! Do not worry — for that moon-faced Joseph

will return, and from the cottage of sorrows you will emerge.
